Amongst Christian flags, the flag that is known as the Christian flag is relatively new. Unlike other Christian flags that represent different branches of Christianity, the Christian flag was created to represent universal Christianity. In this, it is unique amongst all Christian flags.

The Christian flag was created during a Sunday school service in 1897 at Brighton Chapel on Coney Island, NY. Although there was a scheduled speaker that Sunday, he proved to be a no-show so Charles Overton stepped in.

As Overton began speaking, he really did not have anything planned. Across from him was a large American flag which he took as inspiration for his subsequent speech on the symbolism in the U.S. flag. Overton expanded his thoughts to imagine what symbolism might be used to create a Christian flag that could represent all branches of Christianity. The result is the flag known simply as the Christian flag.
